Graduation Requirements
All students in Alberta are working towards an Alberta High School Diploma. However, there’s a little more to that. Below is some detailed information about the minimum requirements to receive a diploma.
To graduate with a diploma, students must:
Complete and meet the standards of these required courses:
- English 30-1 or 30-2
- Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2
- Science (10 credits): Science 20 or 24, or Biology 20, Chemistry 20, or Physics 20
- Mathematics (10 credits): Math 20-1, 20-2, or 24
- Physical Education 10 (3 credits)
- Career and Life Management 20 (3 credits)
- Electives (10 credits): Any combination of any type of electives is fine. Yes, you can take 2 introductory level courses and still fulfill this requirement.
- Additional 30-level courses (10 credits): Beyond English 30-1/30-2 and Social Studies 30-1/30-2
And finally, earn a minimum of 100 credits. And yes, you can have more than 100 without additional costs.
Note: To participate in the May graduation ceremony, Grade 12 students must be enrolled in courses leading to at least 80 credits and may only be missing one required course.
And yes, the ceremony happens before students formally graduate. But no, they do not receive their diploma during the ceremony. However, students do receive a card stating they participated in the ceremony. 😅
